Sunrise on a beautiful morning at Crater Lake National Park. We snow shoed in the day before and camped near the top of the Watchman. We had a front row seat to a beautiful sunrise overlooking Wizard Island.

After being shut out the night before with boring gray skies, I almost missed this sunrise. After listening to it rain all night, I barely recognized the change from rain to snow. I was shocked to see we’d received 4″ of fresh powder overnight. Fortunately I resisted the urge to stay in my warm sleeping bag! I bombed 3/4 of a mile up to this lookout in fresh powder to the spot I had scouted the night before. I was rewarded with this magnificent sunrise as a ray of light shot across the valley. The entire show lasted mere minutes before clouds floated over Half Dome and settled into the valley completely obscuring the light.
An amazing sunrise from this past fall at Arches National Park. I hiked up to Delicate Arch in the middle of the night to shoot stars and the Milky Way. Unfortunately/fortunately there was a front moving in and the sky was blocked up with clouds. So I waited for a few hours for first light and was treated to an amazing light show.
