Yosemite Firefall

This winter I had the opportunity to visit Yosemite for a brief trip to photograph the spectacular Firefall.  I had planned for a full week of hiking, camping, and photography at Yosemite.  Unfortunately mother nature had other plans.  I was able to spend two amazing days there, and then a massive snowstorm blew in.  The park service did a mandatory evactuation of all the campgrounds.  I ended up leaving while it was dumping snow, and it didn’t let up for several days.  They ended up fully closing the park for more than a week.  With dynamic weather always comes the potential for dynamic lighting conditions, and those definitely didn’t disappoint.

After being shut out the night before with boring gray skies, I almost missed this sunrise. After listening to it rain all night, I barely recognized the change from rain to snow. I was shocked to see we’d received 4″ of fresh powder overnight. Fortunately I resisted the urge to stay in my warm sleeping bag! I bombed 3/4 of a mile up to this lookout in fresh powder to the spot I had scouted the night before. I was rewarded with this magnificent sunrise as a ray of light shot across the valley. The entire show lasted mere minutes before clouds floated over Half Dome and settled into the valley completely obscuring the light.
